Oliver Vale is the central character in my all time favorite comic Sci Fi novel, Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede, by Bradley Denton. You can download a FREE full-length PDF of the book via OpenCultutre.com by clicking the book cover to the left. The download links are about halfway through the OpenCulture article, and they lead straight to the author’s own website, so he’s cool with the freebie, don’t worry.
Oliver is a late-twentyish salesman at Cowboy Carl’s Computer and Component Corral in suburban Topeka, Kansas, living the best life he can in the long shadows cast by the tragic 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens (“The day the music died,” to quote Don Mclean), his mother’s death five years prior to the novel’s beginning, and seven volumes of Mom’s diary recounting the intimate details of Oliver’s backseat conception, his often troubled childhood, and his mother’s gradual exchange of a consistently disappointing everyday reality for a world enchanted by Flying Saucers, the lost continent of Atlantis, and a pantheon of Rock N Roll gods whose songs are prayers every bit as efficacious as anything they teach in Sunday school.
Oh yes, and there are real aliens. And Buddy Holly, stranded on Jupiter’s moon Ganymede, taking over every TV on earth to strum his Stratocaster, sing a few songs, and announce Oliver’s name and address to the every authority on the planet…
Just read the book. It’s fun. You’ll be glad you did!
But this is not an advertisement for Bradley Denton’s book. I just wanted you to know that part of who Oliver Vale is.
I Am Oliver Vale
Oliver Vale is also the pseudonym I use when recording audiobooks, doing voiceover work, and designing audiobook and Ebook covers.
I use a pseudonym, in general, because I have a day job (21 years and counting), and I’d just as soon keep my “side career” a covert operation. I don’t do any of this on company time, so I feel no obligation to justify my weekend passions to the cruel masters of my weekday soul. So mum’s the word.
I chose the pseudonym Oliver Vale in particular because:
- Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede brings together a number of things I find fascinating and take pleasure in – quirky, well-crafted science fiction, aliens and flying saucers, the paranormal in general (at least the spine-tingling, fun side of it – bad mojo I don’t need), and the best ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s Rock and Roll.
- Nobody else in the audiobook recording world was using the name.
- The URL OliverVale.net was available, and on sale, to boot, at just $2.99 for the first year!
So I am Oliver Vale, audiobook narrator, voiceover professional, and audiobook/Ebook cover designer extraordinaire. You’ll find samples of my wares, and info about working with me, behind the links in the menu at the top of this page.
